Thirty years ago condominiums were almost nonexistent in the Portland Area. Today, many of the home sales in Portland's urban core are high-rise condominiums and lofts. Condominiums are not a new form of housing, but one that is over 300 years old. Lofts are a late 20th century housing phenomenon whereby living quarters were carved from within big-city industrial and commercial buildings. Recently, these two forms of housing have become a very popular alternative to single family homes.
